How To Protect Your Skin after 40: 5 Top Tips

How To Protect Your Skin after 40: 5 Top Tips

If you’ve come here to learn how to protect your skin after 40, then you’ve come to the right place.

Protecting your skin should be a top priority for every woman, but no one can escape from the inevitability of ageing.

In this article we talk about what happens to skin as it ages, ways to help slow the signs of ageing, CBD Skincare and how to protect your skin after 40.

What Happens To Our Skin As We Get Older?

What Happens To Our Skin As We Get Older?

As we get older, many things happen to our skin:

Oil Production And Elasticity Decreases

Oil production typically decreases, so you may notice your skin is drier. It’s perfectly normal for skin to lose elasticity as we age – this is the loss of elastin that results in thinner and looser skin.

Poor Size May Increase And Dark Spots Appear

Pore size may increase along with fine lines and wrinkles. You may notice that dark spots are more noticeable on your face, which are signs of sun damage.

All these things are frustrating, we know. But we like to say that ageing is better than the alternative, right?

That doesn’t mean we can change some daily habits and invest in ways to protect our skin as we age.

Top Five Ways To Protect Your Skin After 40

Top five ways to protect your skin after 40

1. Watch Your Alcohol Intake and Kiss Those Cigarettes Goodbye

This seems like a no-brainer, but everything you drink, plus your daily water consumption affects your skin. Hydrated skin is happy skin, so make sure you are drinking plenty of water.

It’s recommended to get nine cups (2.2 litres) of water per day for women. If you are drinking alcohol, you will need even more to counteract any dehydration to the skin alcohol causes.

Reducing your alcohol intake is not only good for your wellbeing, but it’s also best for your skin.

And say goodbye to smoking already! It’s really not that cool, and the harsh chemicals inside them do so much damage to your insides and skin.

2. Improve Your Diet To Protect Your Skin After 40

What you eat, of course, also affects how good your skin looks, so be careful of eating too much sugar, fried foods, dairy and salt if you want to have better skin as you age. All these foods are known to dehydrate the skin.

It’s never too late to form new healthy habits, so if you’ve wanted to overhaul your diet, the time is now! Up the fruits and veggies in your day and considering doing fully plant-based meals throughout the week.

Slowly start to add in the good stuff and crowd out the bad things in your pantries.

3. Get Better Skincare Products

We all know a daily moisturiser with SPF is crucial to your beauty regime, but the generic drugstore sunscreen isn’t going to cut if for ageing skin.

Most of these skincare products contain harmful ingredients that aren’t doing your skin any favours. To protect your skin, you should up your skincare game. Consider switching to paraben-free skincare and beauty products, including your makeup.

There are many brands available at everyday shops that are affordable, but if you might want to consider something only a doctor or dermatologist can prescribe depending on the quality of your skin and how much sun exposure you get. The Obagi skincare system receives a lot of praise.

4. Consider Skin Hydration Therapy

In addition to upping your skincare routine and diet, many facial treatments can help.

If you have dry and cracked skin, or noticed a loss of elasticity, try skin hydration therapy. This treatment includes small injections of hyaluronic acid at multiple sites under the skin to hydrate the dermis.

Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in your skin and helps to retain moisture, so products containing HA are known to restore and stimulate collagen production. There’s no downtime with this procedure, so it’s a great option.

5. Experiment With Skin Care Treatments That Are All The Rage

Sometimes the newest trend or fad actually works, and sometimes it’s just a bunch of baloney used to get you to spend money on things you don’t need.

If you are looking for youthful and healthy skin, have you tried micro-needling? This procedure helps your skin produce more collagen and elastin, which results in smoother, firmer and younger-looking skin.

This treatment also comes with the added benefit of reducing fine lines and improving the appearance of acne scars.

You also may be wondering if jade rollers and Gua sha work for improving skin. The jury is still out, but we notice our skin feels tighter and softer when we use them.

And, what about CBD moisturiser?

CBD has been touted as a cure-all, with users claiming that CBD can relieve them from several ails including anxiety, sleepless nights and skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.

Cannubu

CBD, otherwise known as cannabidiol has become all the rage recently and has now made its way into several skincare products including moisturisers, lotions, and lip balms. Despite what the internet would have you believe; CBD is not the cure-all its often touted to be.

There is, however, a growing body of evidence to suggest CBD infused skincare will:

• Improve skin hydration
• Reduce redness
• Reduce overall inflammation

Such claims appear to be supported by thousands of people suffering from eczema and psoriasis, who now swear by CBD skincare when it comes to managing flare ups. Whilst CBD remains novel, we highly suggest adding it into your skincare routine!

These are great tips. I think the two biggest ones here are drinking plenty of water and eating a healthy diet. We are what we eat, and when we put good things into our bodies, they’ll respond.

Though I’m only 26, I’ve been diligently taking care of my skin since I turned 18, in order to preventatively work towards keeping it wrinkle-free for as long as possible. Not to mention keeping it moisturized to avoid acne, which I’m unfortunately just prone to.

These are great tips! I do most of them already, but not the last two. I’ll probably shy away from any therapy that has the word “needle,” lol.

I know this is geared toward women, but I am sure the same tips apply to men. I really need to do better skincare. I have to start by washing my face at night before bed! haha

Although I’m not 40 yet, I know I need to up my skincare product game. It just get’s so hard to narrow it down while looking at ecofriendly companies + nontoxic ingredients. I’m going to check out the one you mentioned! Thanks for the reminder about hydration too!

I think the cheapest way would be adequate hydration through water and enough sleep. It really helps! also, Vitamin C rich foods such as citrus fruits help!
